Summary
"The Mexican-American war is one of the most important, influential, and compelling events in American history, but little known. It has never been allowed to stand alone, because scholars insist on viewing it within the context of the Civil War. It is frequently regarded as nothing more than a preparatory action for the inevitable mid-century conflict to come, a notion that has in some respects militated against any genuine understanding of certain aspects of the war. Individually and collectively, the publication of these regimental histories and personal narratives constitute a source of great historical value. These first-person accounts, compiled throughout the 19th century, chronicle the highs and lows of army life between 1846-1848. The wonderment of first leaving home and entering camp, the excitement of initially going to the front, the clash of arms, the drudgery of camp life, the boredom of garrison and occupation duty, and the anguish of imprisonment are expounded in these accounts. Soldier's attitudes are here recorded with a fullness found in very few other kinds of sources. Attitudes toward army life, toward officers and fellow soldiers, toward the enemy, and toward the political questions of the war are here recorded with a richness and retrospective glance. Comparable perspectives are also available concerning officers, insights into relations among themselves, efforts to secure promotion, and motivation behind their planning and conduct of operations. Such characteristics make these regimental histories and personal narratives one of the most useful sources available to scholars. UPA's microfiche publication The Mexican War: Unit Histories and Personal Narratives encompass the unit histories and personal narratives listed in Norman E. Tutorow's The Mexican-American War: An Annotated Bibliography. UPA has also included items that have been gleaned from other sources. These include the National Union Catalog, other Mexican war bibliographies, and holdings lists and card files from various libraries and institutions. Histories of specific units, actions by these units, and/or an individual's exploits with his unit during the war years, 1846-1848, are included in this publication. In addition, personal narratives are included if they consist primarily of an individual's life, in a particular unit, during the Mexican War. General reference works, state and federal adjutant general's office reports, state histories of the war and compilations of unit histories, have been included. Unit histories representing the contribution of universities, specific cities and counties, or other special group, to the ranks, have been included. The General References category appears at the beginning of each state when applicable. Unit histories and personal narratives have been arranged by state, branch of service, unit and alphabetically by author."--LexisNexis website
