Summary
Victorian Britain was a paradoxial society and one of extreme contrasts. On the one hand, it witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of inventions, scientific advances, and humanitarian reforms, backed by an array of outstanding literary and political figures. On the other hand, it practiced a harsh form of laissez-faire capitalism at home, which resulted in chronic poverty for most of the population, and harsh imperial policies abroad, which subordinated many of the peoples of Africa and Asia to British control. This course aims to explain how the Victorians lived with these contradictions and how Britain changed between the 1830's and 1900
