- Summary
- Alaska is the subject of this episode of the U.S. Army's The Big Picture television show. Promptly dubbed "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" after it was acquired by Secretary of State Seward for seven million dollars from Russia almost a century ago, this rugged land proved to be a valuable star in our nation's flag. The state, known as America's "Outpost State," currently boasts modern cities, progressive schools, rich mineral and game resources, and booming industries that have returned our original purchasing price many times over. Alaska also holds strategic value in military affairs, which have become vitally important to national defense in recent years. This video from the National Archives and Records Administration highlights the state's early years of the Klondike Gold Rush, through its repulsion of a Japanese invasion during World War II, up to its admittance to statehood
